Mississippi Recovery and Hurricane Wilma

"Cancun is destroyed" Mexican navy Vice Admiral

Most of the damage on the Yucatan peninsula concentrated on the tourist city of Cancun. Eyewitnesses said the center of the city looked as if it had been "trampled by a giant".  dpa

"Cancun is destroyed," said Mexican navy Vice Admiral Martin Fernandez. The homes of at least one million people have been damaged or destroyed, Governor Feliz Gonzalez of Quintana Roo state said late Saturday.  dpa

Hurricane Wilma Heads for Florida...

Category 2 or 3 At Landfall on Monday...

A RECORD SEVEN HITS FOR FLORIDA IN THE PAST 14 MONTHS

Wilma on radar this evening...

Fort Lauderdale and Miami have severe damage to their cities.  Extensive damage to high rise buildings...roofs off buildings...and many trees down.

Key West had at least 5 feet of water across the southern portion of the island.

Damage from Wilma sounds extensive early on - initial reports.  Reports of major damage to the courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. Numerous mobile homes reported destroyed across Southern Florida.

Monday - late morning

Late morning satellite...HUGE eye on this hurricane.  Still 105 mph winds.

Here is the latest from Isla Holbox.

Maria Ros of Ecoaldea Gratitud is a close friend of mine. I have known her for 3 years, since I met her hitchhiking through Peru. She is a courageous Mexican woman out to transform the world. With UN and governmental support, she has been organizing a network of indigenous Mayan ecovillages throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

She called by cell phone last night to say she had not evacuated but had weathered the storm but that her own ecovillage-in-construction and the nearby town of Solferino where she had taken refuge were completely destroyed. At that time she was distraught, having been through Hell, and broke down into tears repeatedly. This morning she called again from Valladolid, three hours away from the coast, where there is telephone and some electricity, to say that she had decided to stay in the area to help with relief.

She could go to her family in Mexico City but she chose not to. She only had 200 pesos cash but she has a credit card and can use that to get by, maybe find some paying work to repay it when it comes due.

She says Solferino is wrecked and nothing of the structures they built on the ecoaldea land remains.

Yesterday she went to Chiquila but could only get to the estancia on the South end of town, which is where the shoreline now was, half a kilometer inland from where it had been. She saw one of the ferries upside down on top of a building. Everything in Chiquila was destroyed and it was under water still.

She says she heard from the Mayor of Holbox, Magrita, that someone had been over with a boat but that the sea had completely washed over the island. A few buildings were still standing, the mayor said. There are 20 people on a boat there that was shipwrecked and they were still awaiting rescue.

Monday Afternoon...

I have never witnessed the number of man-made and natural disasters as I have witnessed over the past few years.  I guess since 9/11.  It seems like every few months there is another huge catastrophe.  The world has been through a lot over the past few year.  I hope that 2006 brings a calmer and gentler world.  A hurricane season that doesn't bring all of this death and destruction.  I know the forecast is already for another bad season - but maybe they will be wrong.  Let's all so.

It has been a great adventure down here in Mississippi.  I am really glad that I came back out again.  I have learned a lot and I have met a lot of very nice people.  Living in the Sea Bee has been awesome.  It has been like summer camp :) heh.

I do miss home though - there is no place like home.  Not that I will stay home very long.  I will be on my way to Canada on November 12th.  I am hoping to see snow up there.  At the rate we are going we might see snow in Paducah before then :P :) :) :) hehe.  The first frost is predicted for tomorrow night back home!

I guess Halloween must be close :) cold weather and windy.  The leaves are really starting to turn in Illinois and Kentucky.  I will return to an explosion of colors, similar to SPRING!

On the Canadian front - the silence is deafening.

SHELTER UPDATE FROM DOWN HERE IN BILOXI

There are now 1700 people living here in CAMP SEA-BEE :)

The shelter has 2 meals per day - breakfast and dinner.  There are two television sets that have ONE channel :)  Everyone has been watching BASEBALL!  :)

It has been CHILLY the last two mornings - and should be COLD tomorrow morning!  Go figure.  Mosquitoes are not bad.  I have not been bit but a couple of times.

The ERV I am on served over 500 on Sunday!!!!

"FREE AT LAST"

May she rest in peace....Rosa Parks Dies

A True Hero

TUESDAY EVENING...

TEMPERATURES FELL INTO THE UPPER THIRTIES HERE ALONG THE GULF COAST LAST NIGHT!!!!  BRRRR BRRRR BRRRR

A great day here on the coast.  Our ERV team fed over 600 people today!  That is a lot of people.  I was located in Bay St Louis RIGHT on the coast and then also in Waveland (which is also right on the Gulf Coast).  Both areas are almost totally destroyed for several blocks inland.  The rest of the area that was not swept away by the surge was destroyed by the flooding itself.  The people are strong though and they are determined to make it through all of this.

The spirits here are high and people have Halloween decorations out.  There are even decorations in areas that people are sleeping in tents.

Happy Halloween - Bay St Louis inland a bit

TROPICAL STORM BETA WILL FORM TOMORROW...

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER

MIAMI FL 530 PM EDT
WED OCT 26 2005

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

RECENT SATELLITE IMAGES AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT A TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD BE FORMING IN THE EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA ABOUT 140 MILES EAST OF THE COAST OF COSTA RICA.

IF THIS DEVELOPING TREND CONTINUES ADVISORIES COULD BE INITIATED AT ANY TIME. HOWEVER...EVEN IF TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION DOES NOT OCCUR...THIS DISTURBANCE IS EXPECTED TO MOVE SLOWLY TOWARD THE WEST OR NORTHWEST BRINGING TORRENTIAL RAINS AND SQUALLS TO PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA...PRIMARILY OVER COSTA RICA...NICARAGUA AND HONDURAS. THESE RAINS COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES.

INTERESTS IN THE SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.

LAST TWENTY YEARS OF HURRICANE ACTIVITY

(THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THIS YEAR!)

Notice how the waters were cooler and we had much less activity.  Now that the waters are warmer - BOOM - an explosion of activity.  Add in this year and imagine what that map would look like!  Crazy.  National Geographic Map.
