THE JOURNEY INTO FALL 2005

September 29, 2005

What makes a hero?  Are heroes born?  Are they made?  Does one become a hero by accident?  I don't know the answer to those questions.  I do know that among us, here in Western Kentucky, are many heroes.  Men and women who have risen to the challenges placed before them during these trying times.  Heroes are no strangers to Paducah though.

Throughout the history of this city we have seen men and women pull together after floods, fires, and other natural disasters.  During the 1937 flood, hundreds of volunteers worked with the Red Cross and other relief agencies to help those who lost everything from the rising waters of the Ohio River.  Some of the volunteers lost their own property but still gave of their time and finances.

The recent hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast of America have once again brought this community and this region together.  Hundreds of volunteers have phoned the American Red Cross and asked "what can I do".  Some of those volunteers have actually gone out onto the front lines and worked in the shelters and throughout the hard hit communities.  Normal people who simply have had compassion for their fellow man.  Normal people who have sacrificed a little in order to bring a big smile and a lot of comfort to a strangers who have lost everything.

The response has been enormous.  Thousands of individuals have given financial donations.  The Western Kentucky area alone has raised over $100,000 dollars for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Amazing!

I don't know what makes a hero and I don't know whether heroes are born or made but I do know that Western Kentucky has plenty of heroes among us!

THANK YOU to all the heroes out there who have given of their time, energy, and finances over the past weeks.

Updated Heroes Numbers (I should note that several individuals in Canada have given to the Red Cross in order to help with the recent hurricanes)

The Boy...

The boy walked down the beach
The wind brushing against his face and hair
sand drifted in the air - like snowflakes in the warm summer breeze
In the sky was a rainbow...
...a HUGE rainbow
it filled the canvas from one end to the other

The sun on his back
...he gazed up at the colors
The
blues...the reds...the yellows...the orange and greens
It was like God had waved a magic wand and in a flash - up in the sky
...appeared  a wheel of color
No purpose...no reason - just because
...perhaps to turn a frown into a smile

He stood on the beach and watched the ocean waves...
his mind was somewhere else
At that moment
...time and space did not exist
he was lost in his dreams...in his past
...in his future
his mind drifted in the waves of ocean air

Sigh...
Why couldn't this moment last forever

The wind whipped
The waves crashed
The sand blew
and the rainbow glowed as the sun set

The sweat on his body glistened as the golden spray of light shot forth from the setting sun behind him
It was just him...the rainbow...and the ocean waves at that moment
nothing else seemed to matter as he...as he looked out over the ocean waves
for as far as the eye could see there were waves
big waves
...and small waves

and he turned
and t
he boy walked down the beach
The wind brushing against his face and hair
...sand blowing in the air
and a rainbow in the sky

Sunset on Destin...summer 2005

Thursday, October oops I mean SEPTEMBER 29th

VERY nice weather here today.  Temperatures fell into the FIFTIES overnight and we should see them recover into the 70s today.  I am expecting low temperatures tonight to be in the 40s with SOME 30s outside of the city and in Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.  I am VERY excited about the cooler weather.  Fall is my favorite time of the year...along with spring and winter of course :)

heh

Everything is going well up north.  Doug and Erick are doing SUPER.  Norman is doing great and the foundation he is running seems to be staying busy busy.  No new news from Keri lately.  No new news from David either.  I think he has been kidnapped or something like that.

:)

Look at this spin south of New Orleans today.  Hopefully nothing comes of this...still pretty interesting to watch on satellite.

Rapture...Viola

The night I laid my eyes on you
I felt everything around me move
Got nervous when you looked my way
But you knew all the words to say

And your love slowly moved right in
All this time, oh my love, where you been

Mi amore
Don't you know
My love I want you so
Sugar
You make my soul complete
Rapture tastes so sweet

I'm mesmerized in every way
You keep me in a state of daze
Your kisses make my skin feel weak
Always suffering in your heat

Lift our souls like a bird in the wind
Oh I glide like I'm flying through heaven

Mi amore
Don't you know

My love I want you so
Sugar
You make my soul complete
Rapture tastes so sweet

Mi amore
Don't you know
My love I want you so
Sugar
You make my soul complete
Rapture tastes so sweet

Mi amore
Don't you know
My love I want you so
Sugar
You make my soul complete

Viola...

FRIDAY - FALL HAS ARRIVED!

WOW - the temperature fell to 42 degrees last night!  Just dang!  I love it.  It was cold in the house.  I opened all of the windows and turned the air off.  Such a nice day outside!  BEAUTIFUL!

Dylan's 16th birthday is tonight :)  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DYLAN (a couple of days late to celebrate it...but it is the weekend now).

Everything at the Red Cross is going great.  The chapter is staying busy.  I am prob going to go back out to help in Louisiana or Mississippi next week or the following.  I will be gone for another 21 days.

BREAKING NEWS

KRISTY HAS CALLED AND IS ALIVE AND WELL IN BIRMINGHAM.  AFTER A WEEK OF PLAYING PHONE TAG :) WE FINALLY CONNECTED AT 1 A.M. IN THE MORNING!  Thankfully I was awake when the phone rang.  :)  Lucy is doing great and has a boyfriend now?  Hmmm...not sure about this.  Cheetah needs to approve this so called "boyfriend" before Lucy gets serious.  I suppose a visit is in short order.  :)

Dylan's Birthday party was nice.  He had a bunch of friends down at Cyberia in Mayfield.  They are having a lock-in.  Sounds fun - for those who don't like to sleep.  :)  My camera wasn't working right...needed to fix something - but I did get a couple of shorts.  Will post later.
