KATRINA IS A HURRICANE THIS MORNING AND IS MOVING OUT INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO.  SHE COULD BECOME A DANGEROUS HURRICANE OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

SQUALL LINE APPROACHING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AND WESTERN KENTUCKY.  SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING ACROSS THIS AREA.  RAINFALL TOTALS OVER NIGHT EXCEEDED 6 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS OF WESTERN KENTUCKY.

Meanwhile back home....reports of significant wind damage in portions of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.  Reports that a school building was damaged near Carbondale.  70 MPH winds have been recorded with this line of storms as it moved through Southeast Missouri.

RADAR NEAR LATITUDE 24.6 NORTH...LONGITUDE  83.6 WEST OR ABOUT 460
MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND ABOUT 115
MILES WEST OF KEY WEST FLORIDA.
 
KATRINA IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-SOUTHWEST NEAR 8 MPH. A GRADUAL
TURN TO THE WEST AND WEST-NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY.
 
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 105 MPH WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. KATRINA IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
SCALE. KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE DURING THE
NEXT DAY OR TWO.
 
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO  25 MILES FROM THE
CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 85
MILES.
 
ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS  965 MB...28.50 INCHES.
